started getting into the job, bulk loading, soviet and post soviet movies

I started my work shift cycle. It is not as hard as I feared but not really easy also.

I bought a bulk loader and a 30.5 meter roll of ilford pan 400.

20 cassetes 12$
used loader 10$
bulk cassete of film 40$(expensive cause I am in Israel)

sums up to 62 $ for 20 or so 30-36 exposures cassetes.
a cassete of factory loaded 36 exp ilford pan 400 costs 6.5$.
20 of them would cost 130$,maybe 110$ after bulk buy discount.
I also got some chemical storage bottles and a graduated beaker free of charge.
need only a changing bag cause I am tired of improvising.

I have seen a couple of old soviet films.Ballad Of A Soldier and Komissar, the latter being the better one, while I liked both. I watched a new russian movie "First On The Moon" - a pseudo documentary about a russian moon landing conspiracy theory - inspired by Pelevin's Amon Ra ,I presume. It is not bad at all.

beyt Guvrin and movies

Took a walk in the Beyt Guvrin national park(bell caves and byzantine church basillica ruins).Took 80 pics or so on color films using pentax k1000 SMC A 50/2 and praktica mtl3 135/2.8 pallas magenta am on konica minolta 200 vx and kodak gold 200.
It was grey and cloudy day and light was somewhat difficult especially in the caves.
Summer light usually plays wonderfull tricks there.
Hopefully the results would be satisfying

watched "the village" today
It was ok but not very believable

Now watching "Der Unhold"

dr tetenal or how i stopped fearing and started using ultrafin

Yesterday while mixing ID-11 developer the mixing beaker slid out of my hands and spilled 3/4 of the liter I had.I dilluted it 1:1 and used it to get so so results. After sitting around and moping for a hour I remembered that I have a 3/4 liter of 3 years expired tetenal yoni gave me so I decided to give it a go on a non important film and oh boy!The results are fabulous!I developed 10 films in it (including 5 from barcelona)and sent it to scanning and I will presumably post them in my portfolio in a week or so.

Sent 19 films to scan\develop.11 color 8 BW.

Just wanted to share.

returned from barcelona today

Great city. It's touristy but still, worth visiting.
I could live there for a couple of years.
Art museums kick ass.

Sunday, September 18, 2005

watched the whole evil dead trilogy

that was letting steam out.tired of smartass films.
been to the theater yesterday.seen Momik by gesher(adaptation of David Grossman's short story). It was ok.

what did i watch today

Today have been a day of laziness and indulging in doing nothing.
Watched Alejandro Jodorowsky's Sacred Mountain.I dont take the right kind oif drugs to get it I guess. It is sick shit for the sake of being sick. And shitty.

Finished watching Dziga Vertov's "Человек с киноаппаратом".A great depiction of the "New" late twenties idealised Russia and its relentless pace while showing the human side and the work of the documentary maker in two layers(the cameraman is shot shooting his enviroment).I realy loved the way the camera is portrayed as an active partner in the making of the film.

Dziga Vertov claimed that the only cinema to be made in the Soviet Union is documentary and his documentary has artistic sides and not dry documentation as if to compensate.

Finished watching Chinese Box.Great movie. It's hard to believe the same diector that made it and Smoke also made Maid In Manhattan.

Monday, September 12, 2005

Fuck

Been to some arrangments.I got the notion nothing can be done in Israel without someone trying to fuck you over, like a clerk asking for a comission for himslef and a release from responsibility form without his employers concent.
I hate it,I really do.

Watched Saw yesterday,it's OK but not great.

Saturday, September 10, 2005

Swimming Pool

watched.got dissapointed.I was intersted in Ozon after Sitcom but that film I didnt like.Even the good actors didnt save it.

Thursday, September 08, 2005

El Angel Exterminador

watched El Angel Exterminador and the short Bunuel made with Dali.
There's surely something in the soil\water\air in Spain.

Books are to expensive around here.Yesterday I saw "Midnight's Children"(with Henri Cartier Bressons "Punjab 1948"on the cover) in paperback for 20$!
Mayaoto Musashi's book of five rings pocketbook for 10$!These books used to cost 40-50% of their current prices here just a couple of years ago.

daily movie reviews:

Just watched:
almodovars "la Ley del deseo".Good script, shitty direction.Very old fashioned.
Funny to see Banderas as a gay obsessive youth and not the usual suave latino lover.
"Турецкий Гамбит" - an epic piece of shit.A russian try to outholywood holywood.

Carnivale,Rushdie,Hesse

yesterday I finished reading The Devils Verses-it is a good book,I should look up more Rushdie's book in bookinists stores, bough a couple of Herman Hesse's books(the "last summer of klingzor-three early short stories" and "the glass bead game")one by Julio Kortasar(don't remember which).

Klingzor is the name of the wizard in Wolfram von Echenbauch's "Percival" and other european tales of chivalry.

Finished watching the two seasons of Carnivale.Good show..Suprising how a bunch of shitty actors can create a good movie.Good directing and a HUGE budget I guess.

Carnivale is an italian word(16 century) from which the english one is derived.
It means "the taking away of meat"(Webster). That explains the weird spelling.

Will go to Barcelona in the end of the month with Anna for a week. Will clean my head.

Saturday, September 03, 2005

saturday noon

just finished watching "La Mala educación" almodovar films keep oscilating around a decent level, some are a fall and some are a rise(like a sinus function).
The best one is "Todo sobre mi madre" in my opinion.

I like post new wave european cinema(Francois Ozon,Almodovar, some Kostarica).
It is not as blatant as Pauzolini.I want to watch some new wave films Benuel,Godar. We live in an age when only the zitty movie buffs still know those names but thmselves dream to produce the next Lord Of The Rings which they consider to be a masterpiece of epic proportions.

Got home

The interview was some kind of test and CV exchanging hands. Answer in a week. I am not optimistic. Got a load of old film and a skylight filter for my canonet to drown my mysey. Seen a Rolleiflex in shitty condotion for too much money.
Took some pictures but it's hard to be inspired with a 3 kilo shoulder pack in 35degree celsius and 80% humidity.

Tuesday, August 30, 2005

tommorow's a job interview

Canonet,Books

PHOTO:
Got around today to do this http://rick_oleson.tripod.com/index-165.html to my canonet. It works wonders making it focusable anywhere.Thank you Rick Oleson!
I ran around like a maniac and shot a roll of PAN F.

When I entered a store (which a friend tipped me had an enlarger in the display window) I found an Iskra 1,Lubitel 2 laying on shelves amidst film and difital point and shoots and a FK(13x18 or 18x24 I dont know) in the corner. I asked if the cmeras are in working condition and the salesperson(and owner of the store)said yes. When I said I would like to purchase the Iskra he said it's there for ornamental purposes only. A working Iskra in excellent condition not for sale(sob). And the Enlarger(NEVA)he gave away a couple of days ago. God is playing tricks on me.

BOOKS
Yesterday I practicly finished "The Fall and Rise Of Mister Y".It is a short collection of stories(a compilation of Y.Geffens columns 2000-2005)and it is very good allthough too political for me.

I started reading Salman Rushdie's Devil Verses and quite enjoy it so far allthough it cryptic and requires my full concentration.

Saturday, August 20, 2005

finished ECSTASY

finished the irving welsh book i postponed,it sucks.
Now reading Yonathan Geffen's "The Rise and Fall Of Mister Y"

Friday, August 19, 2005

a couple of new ones

http://www.photo.net/photodb/folder?folder_id=520635

Thursday, August 18, 2005

first experience with the canonet

great lens.killer sharp.great color rendition.meter ok for print film.
very quiet shutter.small size.hand holdable at 1/4 as easy as 1/30 in SLR.
quick focus(if not dark or contra-lit).great flash.

The rangefinder is very uncomofrtabe for me as a SLR user.
The inability to focus on something that is not in the center of the finder, especially at large apertures is a killer. The lack of depth of field table is uncomfortable.

need more experience i guess.

Benedectine

Drank some Benedectine yesterday,it has a pleasent allthogh medicinal taste.

Thursday, August 11, 2005

got the photos today

worked on them, all are very grainy cause the slappy Darkroom work I did ,some negs are scrached, and the contrast is low,but with the help of GIMP(contrast\brightness despackle)some look decent.

bought some books today

while making my arrangements went to the book store and bought Herman Hesse Demian,Salman Rushdi Satanic Verses and Irving Welsh Ecstasy.
I just finished reading the first two short stories in Ecstasy and it is shit.
While I loved trainspotting(book and movie) these shorts are disapointing.
Shock value over literary talent.Hope the third one is better.

Hello world!You suck!

Hello,this is the first post.
Is this thing on?

Went around the old city of Beer Sheba for arangements with Anna and took some pics with my pentax k1000 and 50/2 lens.Forgot how smooth it is and how much I missed it using my praktica mtl3 and yashicamat.

Yesterday developed 10 films, sent them for scanning today.
